Here are 3 cases where Peak Career Consulting was engaged to support an individual in job searching, where the CV in particular was the key driving tool in their success in securing employment.

Derek had worked for a well established family run specialised joinery business for over 40 years when unfortunately the company went into administration and he was faced for the very first time of becoming out of work. Derek had the determination and drive to find new employment which was a daunting task in today’s economic climate, but nevertheless searched through his local yellow pages directory and rang Peak Career Consulting to see if we could help. His main concern at the time of phoning was that he needed a CV having never had one and asked could we help. Following a brief telephone conversation it was decided that Derek needed to assess his skills and then he needed to capture these together with his career achievements, so a home visit was arranged and following a meeting lasting approx 2.5 hours we had gathered all the information required to construct a professional CV for him.

Derek had already started to make a number of telephone calls to known contacts within his trade and once the CV was ready, this was distributed. Within a couple of weeks Derek contacted us to say that he had been invited to attend an interview and within a day of that he rang to say that he had been offered the job and had accepted this.

His comment at that time was “Thank you for making such a difference to me in writing my CV – it made me realise what I had to offer to a new employer by not only my skills and abilities, but the years of experience and knowledge I had gained”

Jayne was working for a major bank in Jersey at a senior level and was looking to return to the UK in search of looking for an industry career change, but also wanting to maximise the knowledge and experience she had gained and engaged Peak Career Consulting to construct a professional CV and to discuss the options open to her in seeking a new challenge.

As with Derek a similar approach was adopted and a CV was constructed which clearly sold the many skills and abilities she had to offer, together with a variety of high level achievements she has acquired. During the many discussions we had around this time, it became quite clear that with the expertise she had gained abroad especially around compliance and money laundering and her management skills, that these could potentially be used in a number of other professions including accountancy and the law.

Peak Career Consulting whilst being in business has developed a number of contacts one of which was a recruitment firm specialising in these 2 fields. With Jayne’s agreement, her CV was sent to this firm who tested the market place. It was not long at all that this captured the imagination of Senior Management within a well known lawyers practise & Jayne was invited for interview.

A job offer was made following a second interview and through career progression Jayne now holds the key position of Head of Business Acceptance.

Jaynes comments at that time were ”The Operations director said that this was the best CV he had ever seen” Jayne was delighted with service we had provided and has recently had her CV updated in order to reflect the achievements she has now attained working for present company.

Jason had obtained a Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering with Computer Science and as a new graduate with very little experience was finding it difficult to obtain employment in his chosen subject. He had been unemployed for about six months when he decided he needed some help with his search. Following a number of telephone conversations it was decided that Jason needed a professional CV, together with a couple of sessions where practical help could be provided through coaching on how to increase confidence when making telephone calls and how to research potential employers and then how to approach them.

The CV was to be the key tool in his job search and once that was in place we fully explored the professional body covering his industry to see if they could assist. They were excellent in that they provided us with a data base of all companies where Jason's degree might be of benefit. So, during one of the sessions this kick started the approach of how to put together speculative letters to see if any opportunities of employment were likely from this list and if any graduate programmes were available and failing that did they have any vacancies arising in the near future. It also became apparent that after detailed research, specialised recruitment companies were also about for the type of work he was looking for and these were approached during another session by making telephone calls so that Jason had a real life experience of how to maximise the use of the telephone.

All of the action taken increased Jason's job searching activity increased his confidence. Despite the difficult economic climate Jason became more focused and determined to succeed and then a website advertisement caught his eye of a potential position, and he submitted his CV. He was invited for interview, was then offered the position which he accepted. Jason was delighted and his comments and feedback to us at that time were "With my old CV I had three job interviews in about six months but the improved CV really helped me get interviews more frequently, at one point I was invited to three interviews in the same week! The session on telephone use really improved my confidence in phoning to ask about any potential job vacancies as well as phoning to chase up job applications and to get interview feedback. I'm really happy with the position that I accepted because it is more than just a job, it's the start of my career."

Conclusions

There is little doubt that Peak Career Consulting fully supported these 3 clients which increased their confidence, kick started their thought process and focused their minds, which resulted in bringing about a successful ending in their job searching programme.
